I <3 Beihai! 1000-year old Imperial Gardens, open for the public's enjoyment. I made this my goal on Sunday morning. After learning a bit more about the bus system and discovering hutongs, the national library, and a humongous police station, I arrived at the Western Entrance. The park was filled with people exercising, strolling, conversing, and generally enjoying the beautiful day.

Picture 2: Shows part of a dancing group of couples. Many groups seem to have just shown up with their own boombox and were enjoying the nice day. This picture also shows (if you look at the woman in the green dress) the masks you see people wearing, even on nice days. The masks/scarves I've seen vary from purely functional to fashionable. They're more commonly seen on cyclists.

4: FansI sat for a while watching these people practicing with their fans. First they were all doing different things, warming up I suppose. Then I turned to watch an aerobics class... suddenly there was a loud WHACK. I looked back over and they were doing a coordinated routine, including suddling flicking their fans open which was the source of the noise. After a while watching, I mustered up my best Chinese language skills and went to ask if I could learn. They said I could, and one of them went with me to buy a fan, and then took me back to her place to practice a little bit. I'm supposed to go back to her place and practice more when I have the time. We'll see how it goes... using the fan is harder than it looks :-)
